"He actually had five cut tendons, but we could not find one of them." ~Dr. David Azouz

"He gets what he gets," explained Dr. Azouz. We had only met Dr. Azouz the day before where he explained that Malachi would have to have surgery on his hand next day.

Leading up to meeting Dr. Azouz was instigated by a whittling accident.  The boys had just received brand new set of whittling tools for Christmas.  They were practicing whittling an owl as I read to them a story of a famous whittler from the 1700's out of the "Children's Handicraft" book.  Halfway through, we all startled as both the boys began to scream.  One screamed out of pain, while the other screamed out of horror because he accidently knicked his brother with a chisel.  There were moments throughout the whole event that will always stick in our minds including Selah nearly passing out due to the sight of Malachi's blood and Ellie having an accident due to being so upset that everyone was upset.  In the middle of all the commotion, the Lord provided peace and we were able to load up in the car and get help.

The damage to his hand included him being unable to give a thumbs up or flex his right hand. At first, the doctor thought that he had only one cut tendon; however, when they got in, they were able to see that he had five cut tendons.  They were able to reconnect four of the tendons.  The fifth tendon had receding into his forearm and they could not locate it.  The blessing is the Lord has created in us extra tendons and the doctor was able to pull a "leg" of one of his tendons to create a new tendon connection.

The doctor did not know what function he would recover.  He was unable to use his hand for 8 weeks and was made to keep his hand in a box with his hand up for the entire time.  He was a trouper and had such a great attitude.  He made it fun and even learned how to write with his nondominant hand.

Miracle of miracles, he healed amazingly, proving to have full function of his hand.  He plays the piano with perfection, swings on trees like a monkey, hunts his game like a true hunter and yes....he builds beautiful woodworking with BOTH his hands.  The Lord's faithfulness truly has been evident.

Grounding

We took a little trip to Arkansas this pass weekend.  Walking to the top of Devil's Den, Matt and I stopped and laughed with joy as we watched each of our children (starting with the oldest down to the youngest) take off their shoes, shimmy a stick in the loop at the back of their shoe, throw their stick and shoes over their shoulders and continue their walk up the mountain.

Many of the tree huggers would call that grounding.  Matt and I called it pure joy to see our children just enjoying God's beautiful nature.  It is these simple pictures that fill us with great pleasure reminding us that there is joy in being grounded....in Him!

Our Prayer

Our prayer is that our children will continue to be filled with joy even in the simple things in life.

Deuteronomy 6:7

You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise.

Until then, have a glorious week! Love, Matt, Shannon, Elijah, Malachi, Selah & Ellie Benton
