"I ordered one jar for a friend. We sat and ate the whole jar in one sitting.  Can I order four jars now?  It's the best honey I have ever had!"

"He just got bit by a copperhead. We have to get him to the hospital."

Matt was carrying Elijah on his back from deep into our woods.  Elijah was a very pale shade of yellow and he was moaning, unable to speak or stand.  His hand was already as swollen as if you had taken a glove and blew it up.

As I drove him to the emergency room, he began having difficulty breathing and was throwing up...green.  He proceeded to throw up and struggle to breathe for hours.

The first ER did not have antivenom and the second had it but could not monitor him because they did not have pediatrics.  "We will start the antivenom because he needs it immediately but we have to careflight him to Children's. But there is no room for you on the helicopter," explained the ER doctor.  I was not going to let him go alone on a helicopter, so I demanded we get an ambulance and go immediately.

The ambulance ride was the longest ride of my life as I watched him go in and out of consciousness, having difficulty breathing and seeing his heart rate drop significantly.  The bite was on his pinky but the venom had continued to creep up his arm and was about to reach his elbow.  As a mother, it was terrifying.  As a father, staying home to watch our other three children, Matt felt helpless. All we could do was pray.

For three days, Elijah was in the ICU.  He began to improve daily.  He only lost complete feeling at the end of his pinky.  He finally was able to explain that he was playing in what they call the "coyote den" in the back of our land.  He was digging in the dirt next to a tree that had a hole at the bottom of it.  The snake popped out, bit him and shrank back in so fast he did not even really see it.  Lesson learned: Keep your hand far from holes at the bottom of trees.

Being the next Steve Irwin, this event has made him cautious but not stopped him one bit.  He still loves reptiles and is not afraid of snakes.  He is a survivor.  "Those Bentons.  They sure know how to survive.  They are tough."  That was a year ago.  Today he is unstoppable, building birdboxes and toolboxes, lathing rolling pins and honey dippers, and becoming an excellent beekeeper...even with a numb pinky.

Pass It On

The Lord blessed Matt with a boyhood filled with learning how to hunt, fish, and survive.  As a father, he finds no greater delight than passing along what he himself received.

Two weeks ago, Matt took the whole family dove hunting, along with our newest puppy in training, Betty.  She did amazing.  Right out the gate, after the first dove was shot, she dashed out, ran straight for it, grabbed it, and brought it right back to the boys.  All these months of dog training EVERY DAY paid off.  The boys were able to see the fruit of all their work. And Betty? Well, she got the thrill of her life.

The Lord blesses us with skills, experiences, and nuggets of knowledge, and it is only fair and right for us to pass them along joyfully to our children.  It is our job to let them build upon our shoulders and become even better than the generation before them.  They are going to learn from someone.  Might as well be us.  More than anything, it is our prayer that we may have many opportunities to teach them the ways of the Lord.

Our Prayer

Our prayer is that our children will grow stronger and closer to the Lord than even the generation before them in order to do kingdom work.

Deuteronomy 6:7

You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise.

Until then, have a glorious week! Love, Matt, Shannon, Elijah, Malachi, Selah & Ellie Benton
